SKIN TEXTURE: The forehead and brow skin is coarse and oily because of the constant movement of powerful muscles extending from the back of the neck to the brow. An oily deeply lined creased appearance presents. The thicker stratum corneum (SC) layer protects from external forces and friction and control of water loss is poor in contrast to hair bearing skin. Skin Morphology of the forehead, glabella (frown area), and nose bridge to nasal tip is similar in being thick, oily and showing open pores.

MUSCLES: Fan shaped strong fibres are fixed to the dermis to create deep horizontal wrinkles. Acting from above, the muscle draws eyebrows and the skin over the root of the nose upwards. Acting from behind, the scalp is drawn forwards throwing the forehead
into transverse wrinkles. With ageing, the brow descends to form droopy upper eyelids.

EMOTION & EXPRESSION: Eyebrows are elevated to produce a surprised look.
Drawing the lower eyelids and cheek muscles tightly into a bunched mass shows extreme grief. Puzzlement and uncertainty can be read from the contraction of the eyebrow as in surprise. Extreme grief is shown by drawing the lower eyelids and cheek muscles tightly into a bunched mass as in the surprised, frightful and horrified look and muscles contract to show anger or an attentive gaze.

SKIN TEXTURE: Neck skin is constantly exposed to the oxidation process from the environment. The ruggedness or coarseness of the skin is due to retained fluid and sun and weather damage. Here the skin is drier and shows more wrinkles with patchy pigmentation. These appear sooner here than in other facial regions. The dermis (deeper layer of skin) carries the manifestations of the ageing process of the neck. Collagen matrix diminishes with age and wrinkles, sagging folds and slackness become visible signs.

MUSCLES: The platysma and strap muscles together offer a hammock & sling-like support for the shape and tone of the neck, with dynamic and static effects of ageing.
In a young person, muscles lengthen and expand only to return to the original dimensions. With advancing age however, the skin and muscles gradually become less able to regain shape and become evermore slack and wrinkled.

EMOTIONS & EXPRESSIONS: Descent of the neck begins from ages 25 onwards and leads to loss of jaw line definition. The double fold under the chin becomes evident.
It can be artfully camouflaged by hair in the male and is the first zone demanding surgical face lifting components in the female.
